Whelks are mollusks with ridged spiral shells, resembling snails, and can reach a length of 12cm. The flavorful, tender meat is often available cooked, but when raw, it should be soaked in salt water for a few hours before steaming for 5 minutes.

Savor with lemon juice, salt and pepper or accompanied by the classic malt vinegar and a winkle picker. Winkles are similar in shape to Whelks, but typically remain under 3cm and possess shells of darker hues.
